The Children & Family Guild

Also known as "Pleasant Pastymes"

Pastymes and diversions were of great importance to the people of the late renaissance. Working class people had limited time for sport and play but made the most of what time they had. Holidays and faire days provided entertainment - morris dancers, musicians, dancing, acrobats… Many enjoyed a theatre outing during an afternoon. Complaints at the time included pleasure loving people not keeping Saints days for church service, "yet keep for recreation of walking and gaming." The Schole of Pleasant Pastymes endeavers to provide such entertainment to children, families and adults with period board games (nine-men's-morris, draughts, chess, tables, mancala), card games, dicing, period toys, active games, and brief pageants during the faire.

Guild members will organize and lead the children's parade through the shire ending at St. Wolfgang's encampment where children will present nosegays to the royals and serenade them in song. We will gather children, teach them a simple round, and then lead them in great hub-bub to the nobles.

Guild members will cheer on the different factions of the Seattle Knights rousing the audience to join in waving the colored ribbons of their champions.

Members of this guild will have ample opportunities for individual and small group street gigging and interaction with other guilds and performers. You will not be stuck with children all day.

This guild is particularly suited for families who wish to volunteer at the faire together. Families running the schole pavillion would invite patrons and participants alike to spend a pleasant few minutes playing a game, giving a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of the faire.

Costumes would be lower middle class and upper peasant wear. Interested parties should contact Mistress Anne Collins (Mel Collins) at melfaire@nwinet.com
