Character Development Questions

When creating your "persona" for faire, especially if you have used our Persona Creation section, you have probably answered some basic questions about who your renaissance faire character is, such as what your name is and where you come from. That is obviously a good start, but you will likely need more to really portray, or "be", an accurate, lively character that people will believe stepped right out of the pages of history.

The following is a list of questions that you can ask yourself about your character. Some require a bit of research, most of which you can do here or at other internet websites, while some just require a bit of imagination. You do not need to be able to answer all of them in order to play a character at a renaissance faire, but the chances are that the more you can answer, the deeper and richer your portrayal will be.

Where are you from?

Why are you here? (Especially important if you are playing a non-Scottish character)

What do you do for a living? How much of your time do you spend at work, and what is involved in your work? Are you part of a guild?

What religion are you? What is involved in practicing your religion? How do you feel about people of other religions?

Who is in your family? Who are your parents, your wife, your children?

Where do you live? Do you own your own home?

What kinds of food do you eat? Where do they come from, and how are they prepared?

How do you tell what time it is? How do you describe what time it is to someone who asks?

What is your calendar like? How do you describe what day it is to someone who asks?

What kind of currency do you use? How much money do you have?

Were you educated? Can you read? What do you know about history and geography?

Who is your king? Who is the local nobleman where you live? Who are the local leaders in your town, both religious and secular? How do you feel about them?

What do you do for fun?
